The Worst Pests You Can Have in Your Home

Of all the advantages Australia has for home owners, one of the country’s downsides is the likelihood of pests. A humid subtropical climate is just right for all sorts of hardy beasts to proliferate, and they do so beside humans.

The average Australian home is full of dark, warm and moist spaces where little critters thrive and survive. While this is a fact of life for most people, there are some pests which just can’t be lived with. As experts in pest control Central Coast homeowners call, we know which ones these are.

 Serious Damage

For many homeowners, termites are the worst pets to have an infestation of. Obviously, people want themselves and their families to live in comfort, without the thought of termites eating the house. Not only that, however, their appetites do actual damage to that house, apartment or unit. Fixing this can be very costly, which is something you’ll have to do if you want to sell your property.

Figures show that 25% of Australian homes will suffer from termite damage at some point. On average, they cause over $7,000 worth of damage to each of those homes. As well as the unpleasantness and cost, another hit is that standard insurance doesn’t cover termite damage. The truth is that it’s just too common.

Another common pest with a voracious appetite is mice. While nowhere near as unpleasant as rats, mice can do a lot more damage. They are much smaller than rats, so can live in all sorts of hidden places. If there’s not enough room, they can often chew their way into walls, especially if there’s wood around.

Health Problems

Apart from causing damage to property, the pest control Central Coast people want is to limit the spread of disease. Household pests don’t generally cause severe health problems, but they can harm vulnerable groups. Cockroaches, for example, are notorious disease spreaders. They are also one of the most common pests in homes and offices across Australia.

Cockroaches are not dirty in themselves, but they get everywhere. This means they transport bacteria from one place to another. Having found their way into food bins, they then move around the home at will. The countless bacteria living in rotting material then end up in places nobody wants them.

Finally a word about rats. Probably the world’s least favourite animal, the rat can make a home almost anywhere. Like cockroaches, rats are dangerous because they transport germs. They also carry fleas, which may themselves carry disease. Vulnerable groups such as young children can easily pick up illnesses from these pests.
